When the mothers of the ton gather to discuss the futures of their unmarried children no one in the ton is quite safe.  Their first project Marcus Holcroft, the Earl of Pennington, is about to have is world turned upside down and with no clue as to where the trouble originated.  Marcus receives a letter from his solicitor informing him of news of some importance.  He arrives to find that if he doesn’t marry the late Viscount’s daughter Gwendolyn, before his thirtieth birthday then he’ll lose his entire fortune.  Though it’s not what he had in mind for his future he won’t risk the safety of the people under his protection and goes off to collect his betrothed.  Unfortunately for him Gwendolyn Townsend, who does know about the wishes her father had for her to marry the earl, has no desire to marry.  Her own meeting with the solicitor told her she had a home and a pension regardless of what she chose, an oversight on the clerk’s who told her she was penniless at sixteen and started her career as a not so great governess off.  She’s been poor and the house, the pension and her freedom are all she needs.  When she learns she’s also got orphan nieces to think of she consents to the marriage only to get access to her dowry.  But can a forced marriage ever offer love?
